This year has been nothing but a disappointment in Hollywood, but the few successes of the summer are still impressive. In this drought between Summer and the Holiday Season, Guardians of the Galaxy has capitalized on the fact that no movies are coming out (and the ones that do don’t have our attention). Post Labor Day Weekend has never been a high point of the year at the box office, but it made the Marvel movie near $300 million, proving that the quirky gamble paid off- literally. Outcast from the sea of comic book movies that take themselves too seriously, the project is not drowning in absurdity or stupidity (like Spaceballs) but is surprisingly smart and funny. Marvel should be proud of their offbeat little hit, Guardians of the Galaxy earns every penny it gets.
