God’s yoke

I hadn’t seen Flight until last night. If I’d seen it sooner, I would have credited it for its testimony about freedom in God’s grace, because it’s a topic I’m passionate about and I’ve written about here and here. Albeit crude and profane, Flight serves up Jesus-flavored humble pie to the altar of the self-willed individual.

At the end of the movie, Whip, played by Denzel Washington, is in prison and has been sober a year, and he tells his AA group:

This is going to sound real stupid coming from a man in prison. But for the first time in my life, I’m free.

Amen. It doesn’t sound stupid at all. It makes perfect sense. All the liberty in the world isn’t worth a damn if the heart yearns for more. That’s what the prophet Jeremiah means by “circumcise your hearts” (Jeremiah 4:4). God wants us to seek…
