R- bloody violence, some sexual content and brief language


I largely enjoyed Crimson Peak, but it’s finally set me to wondering why I always speak of Guillermo del Toro’s work in such a celebratory tone. I think, in the back of my mind, I’ve always known, on some level, that I haven’t seen any del Toro films that I loved unreservedly (Pan’s Labyrinth and, weirdly, Pacific Rim are as close as I get). It’s only just now that those inklings are developing into conscious thoughts. Because Crimson Peak is exactly what I feared — and, somewhere deep inside, expected — it would be: A very, very, very good-looking movie filled from top to bottom with high-caliber talent, and, ultimately, almost entirely hollow.
