Star Wars has been a part of the pop culture lexicon since 1977, but its heroes and villains fill archetypes that have been around since the first stories were told. This is a large part of the series? appeal, and the best explanation for its staying power, now nearly 40 years since its first chapter. The heroes of Star Wars can be larger than life, but in their best moments, they feel like people we know.

Star Wars has been on a trajectory towards a major modern resurgence since Disney acquired the rights to Lucasfilm in 2012.
